SESSION 1 SHARED LEARNING MORNING
Introduction & Leading Worship
Leading Worship is a bit like being the conductor of an orchestra, enabling others to offer their worship to God. In this session the practicalities of leading worship are explored, including aspects such as preparation, prayer, selecting readings, using the lectionary, presence and voice. This session is first as it is foundational for the rest of the module as well as giving you some first pointers for the assignment.
SESSION 2
Understanding Worship
Following on from the study day, in this session we will explore in a more depth the theology of worship. The key question in this initial session is ‘What is Worship?’ as well as examining some of the core elements of worship. Again, this will help with aspects of your assignment so has been placed early in the module.
SESSION 3
The Church Year
Moving on from session two we turn to how worship has been organised in the Anglican Church and the reasons for this. We will explore the seasons and rhythms of the Anglican church’s worshipping year. The Anglican cycle is described, and the importance of marking times and seasons is explored. Again, this session includes important building blocs and resources for your assigments.
SESSION 4
A Service of the Word
Following on from Session 3, we now turn to examine a 'standard' Anglican service in more detail. This very practical session examines the structure, content and guiding principles behind ‘A Service of the Word’ (a term which incorporates Morning and Evening Prayer). We will explore what is important in the Anglican tradition and why, as well as how to put together a service that has a clear flow which will help people to engage with God. This session is imperative for your final assignments so please ensure you go through it carefully.
SESSION 5 SHARED LEARNING MORNING
Creative Prayer & Worship with All-Ages
During the morning sessions of this study day we will welcome Julia McGuinness who is author of the book "Creative Praying in Groups". These sessions will be helpful for Assignment 1. In the afternoon we will welcome Rev'd Susie Curtis who is an expert in the area of All-Age Worship (sometimes called Family Worship, Intergenerational Worship or All Together Worship).
SESSION 6
Music in Worship
In this session we will explores one of the key elements outlined in previous sessions on worshpp services, music. Music has a powerful effect on the atmosphere created, and on therefore on the flow of worship. We will explore how to select and use hymns, songs and music to best effect. We will examine the relationship between tunes and words, getting the balance right in sung worship and what to do if you have very few musical resources. This is again important for your assignments
SESSION 8
Spirituality and Prayer
Moving away from services in particular, in this session we will briefly explore the history of spirituality and its major developments as well as how it relates to our personal and corporate faith life. We will examine different types and methods of prayer and how these can be used to help us develop our prayer lives. This session is designed to help with prayer exercise in your first assignment and also to aid you as you help others to develop their spirituality once you are a licensed Reader.
SESSION 9
Ministry through the Occasional Offices
In this session we will look briefly at the way in which the church uses the pastoral offices of baptisms, weddings and funerals in pastoral care and outreach. This session is designed to help you understand approaches to the 'occasional offices' and how you might support this ministry in your church once you are a licensed Readers.
